Smith "Sonny" J. (Jr.) Young

November 6, 1950 — January 26, 2021

Roseville

Smith J. ‘Sonny’ Young, Jr., 70, of Roseville, Ohio, beloved husband, father, Pap and friend to many died peacefully in his home 11:41 AM, Tuesday, January 26, 2021 with his family beside him.

He was born November 6, 1950 in Portsmouth, the son of the late Smith J. and Kathryn (nee: Newman) Young.

Sonny’s love for his family was beyond measure and his love for The Lord was very intense. He was a member of Roseville Church of The Nazarene. He was a lifelong musician and beautiful singer, playing in numerous bands throughout his lifetime.  He had the natural, self-taught ability to play most all string instruments.  Sonny loved to tinker with and restore old cars and tractors. Sitting on his porch with his wife, watching his grandkids playing and growing up were the best days of his life.  He had a great passion for horses, especially Louie, his favorite.

Sonny had worked in the oil fields for 35 years until his retirement from Midwest Oil & Gas. Prior to his time in the oil fields, he worked for Wonder Bread and Wonder Chip Company.

Left behind to mourn his passing is his beloved wife of 49 years, Kathy (nee: Cannon) Young; his precious daughters and their spouse, Lori and Joe Browett, Kelly Baughman and Kerry and Kevin Bobb; his dear grandchildren, Brandon Barnes, Levi and Hannah Bobb and Sidney Baughman; his siblings, Don(Judy) Young, Phil Young, Lorraine (Bill) Rathburn, Judy Dean, Vivian (Lloyd) Newman; sisters-in-law, Beth and Pat Young; many nieces and nephews who adored him, three special people whom he considered his sons, Ricky Baughman, Kevin Bobb and Dave Barnes; his very special mother-in-law, Caroline Cannon and his brother-in-law, Jack Martin with whom he loved to go get a sandwich.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Kelly Border and his siblings, Omer, Ivan, Joe and Dave Young, Eula McFarland and Jean (Ed) Willis.

The Young family has chosen a private burial for Sonny.  He will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery near Roseville.
