Leonard John Savage

June 26, 1921 — November 8, 2020

Lucasville

Leonard John Savage, 99, of Lucasville peacefully died in the afternoon hours of November 8, 2020 at the Oaks of Northpoint in Zanesville.

He was born, one of five children to his parents, Mrs. And Mrs. Lawrence Savage at home in Roseville.

Leonard attended the Roseville Schools and was one of the last remaining people to have been educated at the one-room schoolhouse on Tunnel Hill Road. He was a very bright young man and went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in physics from Ohio University. Following the horrendous attack on naval forces at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, like many young men of that time, Leonard and his brother instantly enlisted to fight for the freedom of their country. Leonard served in the United States Navy honorably as a radarman aboard the U.S.S. Wichita.

After his loyal and steadfast service to his country, he was discharged and returned home to marry his love, Faye Williams in June 1949. Leonard had a few different successful careers, as a librarian, a pottery worker at Nelson-McCoy Pottery, and an employee of the Jones Coal Mine. Leonard later moved to Lucasville, where he was a critical employee and would later retire from the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant which was the former Goodyear Atomic Energy Plant.

In retirement Leonard taught himself how to play the guitar and formed a back-porch band that would travel around to its member’s homes and play music. He was always up for a fun and an enjoyable time. When asked what his best quality was, everyone would say, “he was genuinely a good guy”. Everyone loved Leonard and his gracious demeanor and heartfelt sincerity will be greatly missed and is something everyone should emulate.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Faye (Williams) Savage of Zanesville, his sister-in-law, Marge (Edward) Finley of Columbus, his brother-in-law, Paul (Micky) Williams; his special niece, Marsha Cairo; his very special great-niece, Paige Cairo and many many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Leonard is preceded in death by his siblings, Ivy, Etta, Fred and Lewis.

The family has chosen, at this time, to mourn privately and have Leonard cremated. His remains will be buried within Rose Hill Cemetery at a later date. A memorial service will be scheduled, and full military honors will be rendered.

Condolences may be expressed on the funeral home’s website at www.goebelfuneralhome.com
