Shirley M. Sturgill, 92, of Zanesville died in the morning hours of August 31, 2021, at Genesis Hospital following a battle with Alzheimer’s Dementia.
She was born on August 26, 1929, the only daughter to the late Clarence and Beatrice (Hamilton) Price.
Shirley spent her early working years at the Hull and Nelson-McCoy Potteries and went on to work another twenty years as deputy auditor for the Perry County Auditors office, from which she retired. Her civic and social duties were extensive and numerous; a dedicated member of the First Hope United Methodist Church, the founding member of the Fidelis Mothers’ Club, a life member of the Crooksville VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries, as well as, served on the Perry County Children Services Board. She was also a dedicated volunteer, spending her precious time, with Genesis Hospice--where she would dress up as a clown known as “Happy”, she helped at the Crooksville Schools, New Lexington Middle School, the Welcome Center, and proudly knitted hats to send to the children at St. Jude’s Hospital. She was very proud to have visited all 50 states in the U.S. and having traveled to 7 countries around the world.
Her family will miss her dearly, in her capacity as a mother, grandmother and friend. She was their clown, the one who could always bring a smile to their face, the one who was always there for them.
Left behind to mourn her passing are her children, Ann (Mike) Hankinson, Jon (Erin) Sturgill; her grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Leah (Dakota) Sowers, Jacob Hankinson, Matthew Sturgill, Olivia Sturgill, Lucy Sturgill, Drake Sturgill, Grant Sturgill and Kade Sturgill. In addition, she leaves behind one great-granddaughter, Briar Sowers.
In addition to her parents, welcoming Shirley into eternal life are her husband, William Sturgill who died in 2007 and her brother, James T. Price.
