James A. Slack, Sr., 82, of Crooksville peacefully died in the afternoon hours of Sunday, April 2, 2023, at his home surrounded by his devoted family.

Jim was born on August 12, 1940, a son to the late Charles and Edith (Woods) Slack.

Jim was well known throughout the Perry County area; he served in many positions in law enforcement. Following his graduation from The Ohio Police Academy, Jim spent 15 years as Chief of Police for the Crooksville Police Department, he then spent two years as a deputy for the Perry County Sherriff’s Department. In addition, to his tours of duty for area village police departments, Jim was pulling double time as a foreman for the Nelson-McCoy Pottery. Finally, he retired after spending twenty-five years with the Somerset Police Department, retiring as its Chief of Police.

Jim leaves behind a very large family who will dearly miss him, his wife of nearly 63 years, Ina Georgene Slack; his children, Kindle (Carl) Anker, James (Carol) Slack, Jr., Jeff Slack, Kevin (Nadine) Slack, Dustin (Stephanie) Slack and Kellee (Amie) Slack; his daughter-in-law, Julie Slack; his siblings, Judy (Dick) Snider and Chip (Evelyn) Slack; his furry friend, Cookie, as well as, his 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his son Kregg James Slack, his great-grandson, Jasper Bracken, his brother, Richard Slack and his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Slack.

In keeping with Jim’s wishes, his family has chosen to mourn privately and have Jim cremated.

His family would like to extend a huge thanks of appreciation to the staff of Genesis Hospice for their generous support during Jim’s final days. The Slack family would like memorial donations to be made to Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care to support the good work that hospice plays in our communities.
