Hazel Mae McCray

October 31, 1915 — June 16, 2013

Hazel Mae McCray, 97, of Crooksville, Ohio passed peacefully to heaven on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at her daughter's residence in Columbus following a brief illness.

Hazel was born October 31, 1915 in San Toy, the daughter of the late Jesse Skeenes and Beatrice Barron Skeenes Sowers. Her perrienal joke about her birth was that she "came in on a broom".

Hazel worked throughout her whole life at virtually every pottery in the Crooksville/Roseville area and was one of the two surviving painters of the famous Hull apples, prized by ceramics collectors the world over.

She is survived by her daughter Shirley Russell of Columbus; her devoted sister, Anna Skeenes Weakley of Roseville and her sister, Dolores Sowers of Columbus; her brother, Jesse Skeenes of New Lexington; daughter-in-law, Arlene McCray of Glenford; her grandchildren, Vance (Lola) McCray, Amy McCray and her husband James Hondros, Dana (Debbie) Russell, Wesley (Elaine) Russell, David Russell, and many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Hazel is preceded in death by her husband Marion (Shoppy) McCray who passed away in 1981; her son, Norman McCray; her sister, Rosemary Manual and brothers, James Skeenes, Hirshel Skeenes, and Warren Skeenes.

Family and friends will be received 11:00 AM-1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 19 at GOEBEL FUNERAL HOME, 36 N. BUCKEYE ST., CROOKSVILLE. Funeral services and a celebration of Hazel's life will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 19 at the funeral home with her grandson, Wesley Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Crooksville Cemetery.
