Donald Allen Baker “Baker” passed away peacefully Thursday morning at Cedar Hill Nursing Home. The last few years of his life were spent battling Lewy Body Dementia. Baker was a quiet man but his sense of humor stayed intact while he battled this crippling disease. Most recently, he contracted the COVID-19 virus and his tired body could not fight the fight any longer. He was born on January 26, 1943 in Morgan County. He was the fourth son of Merle and Helen Baker. He then moved to Perry County where his family lived at the highest point in Perry County. He would jokingly tell the story that it was either the property being at the highest point in the county or the fact that there was a hole in the roof that made nighttime feel like you were sleeping with the stars. He graduated from York High School in Deavertown.
He retired from Petsmart DC 10 after 11 years of service. He was previously employed at The Longaberger Company. He was also a mechanic at various Ford dealerships in Columbus for several years. He was a United States veteran proudly serving in the army for 9 years. He was stationed in Germany and Texas during his time in the military. After his years of service in the military he earned a living by crafting outstanding leather pieces. His holsters and gun belts were some of the finest quality a person could find. His attention to detail was unmatched and it was what made people seek out his unique work. He was proud of his craftsmanship and loved to show people the pieces he had made. Even though he was a quiet man he could talk for hours about leather work. If you were a recipient of his leather work you were fortunate to know it was not just a piece of leather but a piece of art. His business was known as Baker Leather.
Baker his survived by his loving companion Diane Dalton and her daughters Shannon (Joe), Shari (Bob), Andrea, Ashley (Ted) and Abbe (Aaron). He is also survived by his son Duane Baker and his daughter Kelly Baker. In addition, he is survived by his brothers Joe, Wayne and Jerry Baker. His fur babies Molly, Simon, Sugar and Snickers will also miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Buddy Baker and his fur babies Murphy and Sammie.
Per Baker’s wishes no calling hours will be observed and a caring cremation will take place. If you would like to pay your respects to Baker then perform an unsolicited and unexpected act of kindness for an unsuspecting soul. This world needs more kindness.
