Alan Keith Reed, a man whose life reflected remarkable dedication, intellect, and an eclectic spirit, peacefully passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026, at his home. Born on September 22, 1947, in Zanesville, Alan lived a life marked by service, passion, and an extraordinary breadth of interests that shaped his unique character.

Alan's journey was one of profound commitment and sacrifice. Demonstrating a deep sense of duty, he made the decision to leave school and join the United States Army during a tumultuous time. Alan served honorably in Vietnam from 1966-1967, enduring the harrowing effects of Agent Orange, a testament to his resilience and courage. His commitment to serving his country did not end there; he continued as a member of the Army National Guard, exemplifying steadfast patriotism.

Following his military service, Alan transitioned to civilian life with the same dedication. He worked for over a decade at Columbia Cement, where his work ethic was evident, and then dedicated twenty years as the Systems Manager for the Muskingum County Courthouse. His role there was not merely a job but a space where his intellect and eccentric personality flourished. Alan was regarded as a true modern Renaissance man whose profound knowledge and innovative approach left a lasting imprint on his workplace.

Beyond his professional achievements, Alan was engaged in his community and varied hobbies that delighted those who knew him. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodges in Corning and originally raised in the Zanesville Masonic Lodge. Additionally, his fellowship extended to the F.O.E. 463 in Corning. Alan’s adventurous spirit was evident in his SCUBA certification, his penchant for astronomy and karate and his love for racing remote control planes and flying drones. His enthusiasm for metal detecting, his skillful musicianship--including playing multiple instruments and performing in a band while stationed in Germany--and his adeptness at skateboarding and roller-skating--and his talent for creating art through his drawings spoke to his vibrant and dynamic life. Alan’s talents were not confined to the physical realm; he was a master of slight of hand magic tricks, a passionate coin collector, and an aficionado of Little Debbie snack cakes and ice cream. His fascination with pirates, aliens, and all things paranormal added a whimsical layer to his persona that endeared him to friends and family alike. Much like his favorite actor John Candy, Alan had a unique blend of humor, kindness, and an infectious zest for life. Known for his incredible storytelling, Alan had the remarkable ability to weave tales that captivated and inspired. He embraced a wide spectrum of knowledge with enthusiasm and joy, forever curious and endlessly talented. Those who knew him recognized a genuinely well-rounded individual whose life was rich with diverse endeavors and an insatiable quest for understanding.
